Delancey Street provides lawsuit funding for victims of Xarelto.
What is Xarelto
Xarelto is a blood thinning medicine, similar to Coumadin (warfarin) and Pradaxa, used to lower the risk of blood clots and strokes in patients with atrial fibrillation, which is an irregular heart beat which is not caused by a heart valve problem. Patients taking the blood thinner by mouth have experienced serious side effects, including internal bleeding and hemorrhaging for which there is no cure.
Xarelto, which is known generically as rivaroxaban, assists patients with atrial fibrillation lower their odds of having a stroke by keeping blood clots from forming, according to the official Xarelto website. This prescription medication is also used to prevent blood clots in patients who have knee or hip replacement surgery. The blood thinner is also generally used to prevent blood clots from forming in deep vein thrombosis (veins deep within the body) and pulmonary embolism (in the lungs), according to the drug’s website. Xarelto is manufactured by Bayer and sold in the U.S. by Janssen Pharmaceutica, a division of Johnson & Johnson. According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health, there is no specific cure for rivaroxaban, and other coagulants such as Praxdaxa or Eliquis, nor is there a treatment that has been proven effective for stopping severe bleeding caused by these blood clotting drugs,.
When the FDA approved the prescription blood thinner in November, 2011, it issued its most serious warning called a “black box warning.” The warning advised that suddenly stopping the medication increases the risk for heart attack or stroke in patients taking Xarelto. The FDA further warned that epidural or spinal bruising has occurred in patients taking Xarelto who were given anesthesia or who underwent a spinal puncture. It’s possible that the bruising could cause long-term or permanent paralysis.
Clinical study on Xarelto
The effectiveness of the blood thinner was examined in a clinical study which was published in the September 2011 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. The double-blind trial, called ROCKET AF, used 14,264 patients with atrial fibrillation who were at risk of having a stroke. The test patients were given either 20 mg of rivaroxaban or the dose-adjusted blood thinner warfarin daily. It was found that patients who took Xarelto in the study had fewer problems with bleeding in the brain as compared to the study patients who were given warfarin. Rivaroxaban was shown to be just as effective for preventing a stroke or a blood clot as warfarin.
Xarelto Side Effects
The side effects of the blood thinner that are most commonly reported are unstoppable bleeding, and severe internal bleeding. Other known problems include:
1. Red, pink or brown urine
2. Bright red or black stools
3. Vomiting blood or vomit that looks like “coffee grounds”
4. Unexpected or long-term bleeding
5. Pain, swelling, or new drainage at wound sites.
Xarelto is a blood thinner medication, similar to Pradaxa and Coumadin (warfarin), used to reduce the risk of blood clots and strokes in patients with atrial fibrillation (irregular heart rhythms) not caused by heart valve problems. Patients taking the oral anticoagulant have reported serious side effects, including internal bleeding and hemorrhaging for which there is no antidote.
There is currently no medicine to reverse or antidote to cure the effects of Xarelto if internal bleeding occurs. Because there are no good options available to treat internal hemorrhaging, patients who take Xarelto and who have internal bleeding are in grave danger of acute injury or are even at risk of dying.
Defective drug lawyer
Before any new drug goes is sold to the public, it is assumed that all of the risks associated with the drug’s use have been identified during the necessary testing so future customers can make an informed decision about whether to use it or not to use the new drug. When drugs are released before a full understanding of all of the possible side effects have been determined, the results can be deadly.
If you or a loved one has suffered in any way as a result of taking a defective drug, it is critical that you seek the advice of a reputable product liability attorney with the ability to protect your interests at all time.
