Start With Why

Happy Monday!

I wanted to share this remarkable video from author Simon Sinek – a thought leader who helps big companies like Apple, etc.

How do big companies like Apple, Harley Davidson, etc inspire action and loyalty?

It’s literally a billion dollar question.

Simon Sinek, in his book, explains that truly great brands start “with why.”

What does that mean?

Every company knows what they do.

  • They describe their product
  • They describe their company

Some companies, know how they do it.

  • They cite price as how they are better
  • They cite speed, or some other factor like that

FEW companies articulate why they do what they do.

For example, most consumers are happy to purchase an iPod, iPhone, Desktop, or even a Router from Apple – even though any one of Apple’s competitors are equally qualified to produce the same hardware!

Why is that? It’s because Apple has clearly defined itself as a company that believes in challenging the status quo, and always being different – and creating the solution consumers want – not just a knockoff.

It’s a lot to absorb, but if you think about it – Apple has always been the company who says “think different.” We’re happy to purchase anything Apple creates, because we believe that they are the only company who thinks different and can make truly unique and well thought out devices – whereas other competitors, just don’t seem trustworthy.

What is your purpose?

As someone who works with businesses all day, I can say for a fact – differentiating yourself is difficult. At Delancey Street, we provide small business loans, and more, but the reason we do it is because we truly believe that we help entrepreneurs unlock opportunities through funding.

We provide opportunity – where none exists.

We believe this, and this is the foundation around what we do.

What we do – simply reinforces our why.

After watching Simon Sinek’s video, you should think about how you can define your company purpose to differentiate yourself from competitors – and why consumers should trust your brand.

Instead of focusing on how your service is better/faster/cheaper – focus on your purpose and why you do it, and you might be able to improve your business.

That’s it from me! I hope you found this useful!
